Understanding Asian Americans’ Psychosocial Wellbeing and Community Qigong Exercise through an Anthropological Lens by Ella Yang

Abstract: Qigong is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) exercise that has the potential to promote one’s well-being and mind-body healing. This project aims to investigate how community Qigong exercise helps improve the psychosocial well-being of Asian Americans and impacts their identity recognition. Ethnographic interviews are used so that study participants can tell their stories themselves. Together with the statistical results on the health effects of Qigong exercise, this project evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of promoting TCM exercise among the Asian American population, while enhancing community participation and inclusion.

Bio: Yi (Ella) Yang is a rising junior from China, majoring in Psychology and Anthropology with a concentration of Medical Anthropology and Global Health. She is currently an undergraduate research assistant at CHOP participating in projects related to adolescent depression prevention and treatment, as well as a volunteer of the hospitality team helping families at CHOP. Her independent research interests include psychosocial well-being of minority populations and the grief of bereaved families in China. Her ASAM project aims to identify a feasible and acceptable way for the ASAM communities to improve their own well-being and strengthen their community bonding. In her free time, Ella enjoys cooking, traveling, playing with cats, and chatting with friends in the attic.
