Abstract: Austin is in the midst of an affordability crisis. One of the fastest growing cities in the US, Austin has been unable to match the insurmountable demand for housing. A huge obstacle to the city’s efforts to create more housing supply is the city’s restrictive zoning policies. While Austin’s Asian American population has been steadily increasing over the past couple of decades, zoning has a disparate impact on Asian Americans who rent or are looking to secure long-term housing. This talk will use Austin as a case study and aims to illustrate how Asian Americans are impacted by zoning policies and how local government can become a vehicle for political mobilization and action.

Bio: David is a Chinese American from Austin, Texas majoring in American History with a minor Asian American Studies. He is interested in Asian American jurisprudence and Asian American participation local and state government.
