Join Penn Asian American Studies Professor Rob Buscher for a conversation about Japanese American food culture. Rob will be joined by Haruka Roudebush, the Senior Programs Manager at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, where he directs and coordinates multiple culinary programs every month for people to learn and experience Japanese and Japanese American cuisines from kitchen professionals, chefs and other members of the community. The session will feature a brief cooking tutorial followed by an extended discussion about contemporary Japanese American culinary practice.

Haruka Roudebush is a shin-issei based in San Francisco, where he works as the Senior Programs Manager at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC/the Center) in San Francisco Japantown. Haruka is also involved with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), currently serving as the national JACL's Vice President of Membership as well as serving as a regional board member of the JACL Northern California Western Nevada Pacific District. Prior to his work in Japanese American community-based nonprofits, Haruka also worked in prisoner rights advocacy assisting in large class action litigation against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, pushing for improvements in confinement conditions and accommodations for prisoners with disabilities and in mental health treatment.

Rob Buscher is a film and media specialist, educator, arts administrator, and published author who has worked in non-profit arts organizations for over a decade. As a person of biracial Japanese American heritage who is deeply involved in his community, Rob also has an expertise in cultural sensitivity training, community organizing, and advocacy issues related to the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Rob serves as President of the Philadelphia Chapter of civil rights group Japanese American Citizens League and chairs the editorial board of Pacific Citizen, the organization’s national newspaper. In his spare time, Rob is an accomplished home chef and enjoys cooking a wide variety of cuisines.
