David Deng (he/him) is a junior from Austin, Texas studying American History
and Asian American Studies. His research project, titled ”Asian Americans and
Zoning in Austin,” aims to understand how city zoning practices and reform
affects Asian Americans living in Austin. While Austin’s Asian American
population has been steadily increasing over the past couple of decades, the
overall rise underscores the many Asian Americans that have been priced out
of the city. Exclusionary zoning disparately impacts Asian Americans who rent
or are looking to secure long-term housing. his project examines how Asian
Americans are affected by zoning policies in Austin and how government
action can become a vehicle for political mobilization and progressive change.
In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and running along the Schuykill River.
